Birdcage

Fun, feisty and a little bit fabulous: Birdcage brings a little bit of South Beach to Grant Park. Longtime friends and restaurant partners Leslie Cohen and Shaun Whitmer (the team behind Firepit Pizza Tavern right next door) named it after one of their favorite movies. It’s also a play on words, since the birds cook on a grill that looks like a cage. Look for a menu that’s a love letter to the family meals they’ve shared with coworkers over the years, mixing Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican flavors.

Highlights

Garlic Crab Claws from Birdcage in Grant Park.

Garlic Crab Claws

These started as a one-day special and were so popular they made it onto the menu. Big blue crab claws are slowly sautéed in clarified butter with a heaping spoonful of garlic, then finished with tahini and fresh cilantro.

Frozen & Tropical Cocktails from Birdcage in Grant Park.

Walk in and feel like you’re on the beach. The Pirin Talet, their take on a Painkiller, mixes coconut cream, navy rum, orange juice and pineapple.

Sweet Potato Bravas from Birdcage in Grant Park.

Sweet Potato Bravas

A Latin spin on patatas bravas: cubes of sweet potato fried until crispy outside and tender inside, then finished with flaky salt and a swipe of sauce.

Latin Rotisserie Chicken from Birdcage in Grant Park.

Adobo Chicken

Birdcage brines its chicken for two days in lime, salt, chilies and sugar, so the flavor goes all the way to the bone. It then cooks low and slow on the rotisserie until the skin is golden and the meat is juicy. Pair it with their house salsas.
