Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

Atlanta has a mouth-watering selection of bakeries and confectioneries ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.  From organic chocolates to decadent desserts, here are some of our favorite places to indulge your sugary cravings before heeding your New Year’s resolutions!

Cafe’ Intermezzo

Open since 1979, Atlanta’s original European-style coffee house has two locations, Buckhead and Dunwoody, serving a tempting selection of over 100 tortes, tarts, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, and pastries as well as a variety of coffee drinks, teas, beer, wine, and liqueurs.

Alon’s Bakery and Market

Known for their freshly baked baguettes, croissants, pastries, and cookies, this Virginia Highlands bakery expanded to include a variety of imported and local artisan cheeses, specialty goods, wines, prepared salads and sandwiches.  Get a chocolate chunk cookie, you deserve it!

Revolution Doughnuts

This Decatur newcomer has Atlanta abuzz over its caramel bacon doughnuts and strawberry sliders.   Give in to temptation with a box of Nutella creme puffs.

Cacao Atlanta Chocolate Company

Local chocolate artisan Kristen Hard has a passion for handcrafted organic chocolates.  Bars and truffles are flavored with herbs and spices for an intensely rich chocolate experience.

Paolo’s Gelato

Skip the eight hour flight to Italy and head over to this tiny boutique shop in the Virginia Highlands for authentic gelato including traditional favorites like amaretto and capuccino, or try one of Paolo’s unusual flavors like avocado or jasmine, and make sure to pick up a box of imported Italian cookies to take home.

La Madeleine

This country French cafe’ offers everything from savory crepes to traditional pastries.  Try a signature madeleine with a bold espresso.  Serving breakfast, lunch, and desserts at their three Atlanta area locations….Duluth, Marietta, and Sandy Springs.

Babette’s Cafe’

Ever since I discovered chef/owner Marla Adams’s dried cherry tart I have ordered one for the holidays.  Dense, rich and chewy, the tart is only available in the fall and winter and worth every calorie!

Highland Bakery

The owners of this award-winning bakery mill their own grains making everything from challah bread to amazing wedding cakes that are (almost) too gorgeous to eat.  The original location in the Old Fourth Ward has spawned two offspring, Buckhead and Midtown.

Joli Kobe

If you are craving marzipan, mousse, or meringue, make a trip to one of this bakery’s two locations, Sandy Springs or Midtown.  For a fabulous French and Japanese fusion experience, try a flaky croissant filled with red bean paste, a staple in Asian sweets.

Sublime Doughnuts

You can find this creative doughnut shop in the heart of Midtown.  Tired of boring birthday cakes?  Have the recipient’s name spelled out in doughnuts shaped like letters, each a different flavor!

King of Pops

Atlanta’s own purveyor of popsicles made with organic ingredients from local farmer’s markets, like their blackberry mojito made with fresh fruit and mint.  Find their white carts with the colorful logo everywhere in the spring and summer and at select retailers.

CamiCakes

Now with two Atlanta area locations, Vinings and Buckhead, it’s a short drive to find these whimsical miniature works of edible art.  Blow your diet with an Elvis cupcake, chocolate cake with creamy peanut butter and banana frosting.
