Top 5 Grilled Cheeses In Atlanta

Is there anything more satisfying than melty cheese squished between two slices of fresh baked bread? This is obviously a rhetorical question. Grilled cheeses became popular during the Great Depression because of its inexpensive ingredients, but chefs have stepped it up throughout the years. White bread has evolved into sourdough, sesame crusted or seven grain while the cheese has upgraded from processed American to Gruyere, Manchego, Brie and beyond! This comfort food can be found on all corners of Atlanta, but the best of the best are far and few between. See who we categorize as the top 5 curators of these all-American sandwiches.

Joy Café (Buckhead)

Equipped with a full menu section of grilled cheeses, Joy Café is sure to please any GC aficionado. Our favorite? The southern grilled cheese made with Joy’s homemade pimento cheese. We also add bacon and tomato for an extra hit of decadence.

Tom + Chee (Alpharetta/West Midtown/Buford/Kennesaw)

This restaurant definitely respects its namesake with dozens of grilled cheese variations- both savory and sweet. Our top savory pick is their grilled mac + cheese as in- overstuffed with Mac & cheese! The top pick for sweet is their Choco Bacon Bliss with bacon, chocolate pieces, Mozzarella cheese and chocolate Mascarpone between a halved donut! It’s so good you may need to order it as a double decker.

Nectar Food Truck (Decatur & Piedmont Park)

We define a grilled cheese as any cheese filled sandwich that’s heated. Even though Nectar has two fabulously tasty “grilled cheeses” on their menu, we sway toward their Spicy Chipotle Chicken Panini. It’s pressed with Mozzarella cheese, oven roasted chicken breast, greens and roasted red peppers with house-made chipotle sauce on fresh multi-grain bread. You may even feel healthy when you’re finished with this one.

Buckhead Diner (Buckhead)

Home to 4 signature grilled cheese styles, Buckhead Diner is an expert in this field. There is no wrong order between their Four Cheese variety melted on Parmesan crusted egg bread, one with fried eggs, Provolone cheese & tomato on toasted artisan country Italian bread, another with Georgia Cured Ham and Fontina grilled with spinach, granny smith apple, mustard aioli on butter toasted Buckhead Bread Company whole wheat bread or their final selection with grilled vegetables, Portobello mushrooms, Provolone cheese, Dijon aioli, fresh basil melted on toasted herb focaccia.

Ormsby’s (Westside)

For an option with upgraded bread and cheese that puts you in a completely euphoric state after just one bite, order The Madison at Ormsby’s. Their signature grilled cheese combines Gruyere and White Cheddar cheeses with roasted tomatoes and prosciutto on top of grilled country sourdough bread. Good news- Ormsby’s is open late night!
