Steak Shapiro’s Top 10 Atlanta Pizza Joints

Editor’s Note: This article was first published in 2021 and last updated February 9, 2023.

How does Atlanta stack up as a pizza city?  While we are not going to be confused with New York or for that matter Boston or Chicago we do have a lot to be proud of and keep getting better which is why compiling this list was not easy but it is indeed what I am paid to do….I give you then: The Top Ten Pizza Places in Atlanta (plus a few honorable mentions) in alphabetical order of course.

Steak’s Top Ten:

1. Amalfi

This place is simply kick-ass, there is no denying that. They’re a great option if I am downtown and hungry after a game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium or if I am in need of a good lunch in Buckhead or weeknight dinner with the wifey. The pizzas come out HOT and I like to dig into their pastas too.

Antico - Sophia Pizza

2. Antico

No conversation on Atlanta pizza can be had without acknowledging Antico Pizza and how they put pizza on the map in this town. Perfect crust, impeccable ingredients and the greatest vibe. While Antico has all types of pizza and Italian dishes happening there I promise the San Gennaro pizza is what pizza tastes like in heaven.’

3. Fellini’s Pizza

Every Atlantan has a strong connection to the legendary Fellini’s pizza and for that reason and their always “right on target” slices and full pies they belong on this list. I always order the savory sweet tomato sauce on the side for ideal dipping and their white pizza with garlic is pizza lovers magic.

4. Glide

We’re not New York but Glide Pizza is as close to it as you can get. For a perfectly thin crusted foldable pizza you’re going to want to house in .3 seconds, pick up a pie from Glide in O4W.

Grana - Potato Pizza

5. Grana

The patio is simply one of the most talked about in all of Atlanta and the pizza deserves similar hype. The Neapolitan style pizza is pure bliss especially with their famous home-made veal meatballs alongside to create the perfect one/two punch.

6. Humble Pie

Atlanta has been going crazy for Ron Hsu and his new pizza place Humble Pie.  Sure, I love the classics like Pepperoni but it’s hard to resist some of the funky pizzas Ron and his team are serving up. I can’t get enough of the Loaded Baked Potato with bacon, chives, and potatoes, and for a Boston boy like me, the Clam Pizza makes me feel like I’m eating chowdah!

7. Nina and Rafi’s

Right smack on the Beltline we have a legendary spot that folks have fallen in love with. There is a lot to love about Nina and Rafi’s but what Atlanta and America is talking about is the Detroit Red Pie pan pizza that brings a crust you will go to sleep dreaming about.

8. Plant Based Pizzeria

If you didn’t think a vegan pizza spot could create a great pizza, then you thought wrong. They have some pretty insane flavors like the Georgia Peach and an alfredo pizza.  You wouldn’t think that these flavors would work but it seriously, seriously does. This spot is also Black-owned so get out and support some great local eats.

9. 04W Pizza

Talk about a loyal following, this legendary spot in Duluth delivers memorable New Jersey style pizza with the Grandma pie being at the top of the class. If meat is your thing you’re in nirvana with their homemade meatball and sausages that takes pizza to a new horizon.

10. Varasano’s Pizzeria

Jeff Varasano is a pizza legend who researched pizza like a mad scientist before opening his first pizza joint in Buckhead in 2009. The pizza is full of perfect flavors and delicious crust. I also will mention that the Varasano’s located at Gate A at Hartsfield Jackson airport might be the tastiest airport delight in America.

Honorable Mentions:

Athens Pizza

I grew up in Boston where the savory sweet and deeper crust style of Greek pizza was the rage and Athens Pizza in Decatur beats all of them. Started by the legendary Papadopoulos family almost 45 years ago this is the ultimate family run joint that all big cities crave.

Karvelas Pizza

Phenomenal East Coast pie in Hogansville and Newnan and LaGrange? You better believe it with the most lovable culinary family this side of the Mason Dixon line and a future Food Network Star in Joey Karvelas to boot.

Mellow Mushroom

Perhaps the finest pizza chain in the country has been delighting Atlantas since 1974 with impeccable crust, super creative pies and a loyal following that most restaurants could only dream of.

Rosati's - Deep Dish | Photo:

Rosati’s

The perfect neighborhood pizza spot serving the perfect Chicago style Deep Dish that Chi-town transplants will be proud of.

Slim and Husky’s

The story is as great as the pizza at this spot with two Atlanta locations that started in Nashville with three college roommates that loved pizza all the time. The respect for what makes a great pizza matters as much as the nods to Black culture with pizzas named for all time hip hop artists from Cee Lo Greene to Wu-Tang Clan.
